Reading and Phonics

Our absolute priority is ensuring that every child can read, starting with our youngest children. Our reading curriculum is ambitious, well-planned and focused on securing foundational knowledge so that all pupils can read with increasing accuracy and confidence. Pupils in early years quickly learn their sounds, and highly skilled adults support them to keep up. Nothing is left to chance. Reading is woven into every aspect of the curriculum; each year group has carefully chosen books and literacy links. Leaders ensure that books in school reflect the diversity of the school community and the world in which our pupils live.

One library, hundreds of adventures!

Our school library has developed with support from our PTA which has enabled us to build a range of fabulous books. We use the Accelerated Reader scheme, which helps motivate pupils to read more through engaging quizzes, goal setting, and personalised recommendations. As pupils increase their reading volume, they develop greater reading stamina, word recognition, and language comprehension skills.

We have a super team of librarians that look after our library and you can see them in action here:

Our phonics scheme - Read Write Inc

In 2013 we revised our approach to teaching Literacy in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 by introducing the Read, Write Inc Scheme.

Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin, provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy. It is used by more than a quarter of the UK’s primary schools and is designed to create fluent readers, confident speakers and willing writers.

Each Read Write Inc. programme meets the higher expectations of the new national curriculum and uses effective assessment to accelerate every child’s progress.

Since the introduction of RW/Inc our standards have risen sharply.  The majority of our children have completed the programme by the end of Year 1 and there is a structure in place for those children who need more teaching in Year 2 and above.

If you have any questions about our reading scheme or want to know more about how you can help your child with reading at home, please ask your child’s class teacher.
